Race spotlight

HYROX San Diego makes its debut from May 13–16, 2027, bringing four days of racing to one of California's most iconic coastal cities. As a brand-new addition to the North American calendar, it's expected to attract athletes from across the western United States and international competitors looking for a destination race.

San Diego's combination of year-round outdoor fitness culture, mild spring weather and easy airport access makes it an ideal HYROX host. With the venue still to be announced, athletes should book flexible accommodation until race logistics are confirmed.

Racecation Review

San Diego is built for an active long weekend. Between its beaches, waterfront, parks and excellent food scene, it's one of the easiest HYROX destinations to enjoy before and after race day.

Whether you're travelling solo, with training partners or bringing family, the city offers enough to fill several extra days. Coronado, La Jolla, Balboa Park and Mission Bay all sit within easy reach of downtown.

Hotels

General note: Until the venue is announced, the safest strategy is to stay in Downtown San Diego, Mission Valley or Old Town, giving easy access to transport regardless of where HYROX confirms the event.

📍 Downtown / Waterfront (Recommended)

Pendry San Diego — Premium ($$$$)

Excellent choice for athletes wanting walkable restaurants, recovery options and a central location.

Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina — Mid-range ($$$)

Large full-service hotel close to the harbour and major event infrastructure.

Moxy Gaslamp Quarter — Budget / Smart Value ($$–$$$)

Compact, modern and ideal for athletes prioritising location.

🚆 Mission Valley / Old Town

Legacy Resort Hotel & Spa — Mid-range ($$$)

Great balance of value, comfort and access to the freeway network.

Courtyard Old Town — Mid-range ($$–$$$)

Convenient for airport access and generally lower room rates.

Best Western Hacienda Old Town — Budget ($$)

One of the better value options for longer stays.

🏖 Beach Extension

Hotel del Coronado — Premium ($$$$)

Perfect if you're extending your trip after race weekend.

🧠 RoxRadar Tip

Book a flexible central hotel now. Once the venue is announced, compare travel times before switching to a venue-side property if it offers a significant race-day advantage.

Visa guide

Athletes from Visa Waiver Program countries can usually enter the United States for up to 90 days with an approved ESTA before departure. Travellers from countries outside the VWP generally require a B1/B2 visitor visa, so allow plenty of time before booking travel.

Carry details of your accommodation, return flights and event registration if requested by US Customs.

Cost Insights

San Diego sits in the premium tier of North American HYROX destinations, although careful planning can keep costs under control. Flights are generally competitive thanks to strong domestic connections, while international travellers often connect through Los Angeles or San Francisco. Hotels are the largest expense, particularly around the waterfront, but Mission Valley and Old Town usually provide better value. Food ranges from inexpensive Mexican eateries to premium waterfront dining, and the city's compact airport helps reduce transport costs. Overall, San Diego rewards athletes who book accommodation early and choose location carefully once the venue is confirmed

Public transport guide

San Diego International Airport is only minutes from downtown. Airport shuttle buses, taxis and rideshare services provide quick transfers, while MTS buses connect directly with the trolley network.

Once the venue is announced, most athletes will find rideshare the easiest race-day option. Until then, staying close to Downtown or a trolley line provides the greatest flexibility

Recovery Guide

San Diego is one of the easiest HYROX cities for recovery. Flat waterfront paths, beaches and mild temperatures encourage easy movement the day after racing.
