Look for gyms around Century City, Wuhou, or central Chengdu depending on where you stay. For HYROX-style preparation, prioritise functional fitness gyms, CrossFit-style facilities, and commercial gyms with SkiErg, rowers, sled space, or free weights.

Search terms to use:

• Functional fitness Chengdu
• CrossFit Chengdu
• Chengdu gym Century City

Chengdu is one of China’s strongest food cities, but race-week eating needs a bit of control. Use the spicy Sichuan food scene after racing, not the night before. Before race day, look for simple rice, noodles, eggs, fruit, dumplings, and familiar hotel breakfast options.

Good race-week food approach:

• Keep pre-race meals simple and low-risk
• Save hotpot and heavier Sichuan dishes for after the race
• Choose hotels with breakfast included
• Carry familiar snacks if you have a sensitive stomach

After racing, keep recovery simple: rehydrate, get a proper meal, and avoid going straight into heavy sightseeing if you have travelled internationally. Chengdu is a good city for a slower post-race recovery day, especially if you plan food, walking, and massage around how your legs feel.

Useful recovery options:

• Hotel gym or light bike session
• Massage or sports massage near central Chengdu
• Easy walking day after racing
• Prioritise sleep if dealing with jet lag

Chengdu has a strong metro network, but athletes travelling with luggage and race gear may find a taxi or ride-hailing transfer easier from the airport. For race day, staying near Century City is the lowest-stress option. If staying central, check metro routing in advance and allow extra time for walking between stations, venue entrances, and bag drop.

China visa requirements depend heavily on nationality and trip structure. Some travellers may need a tourist visa before arrival, while others may qualify for China’s visa-free transit rules if they are travelling onward to a third country. China’s 240-hour visa-free transit policy allows eligible travellers to stay for up to 10 days when transiting through approved ports, but it is not the same as a normal return-trip tourist entry. Always check the latest China entry rules before booking flights.

Chengdu should be more affordable than major European or U.S. HYROX cities. Hotels, food, taxis, and local transport are generally better value, although international flights may be the biggest cost depending on where you are travelling from. Budget extra for translation apps, mobile payments, and airport transfers if it is your first trip to mainland China.
