Racecation Review

The World Championships are more than a race;  they’re a pilgrimage for HYROX athletes. Stockholm offers a destination that pairs competition with recovery, culture, and adventure. Sauna-and-dip traditions, waterfront trails, and an archipelago of islands make this city a wellness capital. Off-course, explore Gamla Stan’s old streets, dine on New Nordic cuisine, or celebrate under the midnight sun with your crew.

Cost Insights

With comparable costs to the 2025 WC host city, Chicago, Stockholm is sleek, efficient—and relatively expensive. Hotel rates near Stockholmsmässan typically range from $150–250 USD per night, with budget options starting around $100. Dining is high-quality but pricey: meals at cafés cost $15–25, and dinners at mid-range restaurants average $40+. Public transport is excellent and reasonably priced with multi-day passes. Many museums offer free entry on select days, and outdoor attractions like Gamla Stan and waterfront paths are free.

Hotel Picks

Whist the offical date of the 2026 HYROX World Championships has not been released, the athletes already qualifies received an email saying it  will be in mid June. Our guess is 18 - 21 June!

Worlds 2026 will be hosted at Strawberry Arena in Solna, just north of central Stockholm and well-connected by commuter train. Top nearby options include Quality Hotel Friends (currently sold out which is a clue to the date!) located adjacent to the venue, and Comfort Hotel Solna for a modern, mid-range stay.

For those based in central Stockholm, the Pendeltåg offers direct access to Solna Station in under 10 minutes. With excellent transit, walkable streets, and a range of hotels at various price points, athletes can stay close to the action with ease.

Public transport guide

Stockholm’s public transport system is fast, clean, and athlete-friendly, making it easy to move between the airport, city, and arena with all your race gear.

  • Airport → City (Arlanda Express) – The quickest way from Arlanda Airport to central Stockholm. The non-stop Arlanda Express train takes just 20 minutes and runs every 15 minutes. Comfortable seating and space for luggage make it stress-free after a long flight.
  • City → Arena (Commuter Trains) – From Stockholm Central, commuter trains head to Solna Station in around 7 minutes. From there, it’s a short walk to Strawberry Arena, perfect for athletes staying in the city centre.
  • Getting Around the City – Stockholm’s metro is famous for its art-filled stations, and buses/trams reach most neighborhoods. The SL Access Card (available for 24h, 72h, or 7 days) offers unlimited travel across metro, buses, and ferries — ideal for athletes extending their stay.
  • Pro Tips for Athletes – Avoid peak commuter hours (7:30–9:00 and 16:30–18:00) if carrying gear. Taxis and rideshares are reliable but expensive; public transit is usually faster. Many locals bike, and city bike rentals are a fun, low-impact option for gentle mobility before or after the race.

Best photo spots

Stockholm is one of Europe’s most photogenic capitals, with a mix of medieval streets, royal landmarks, and stunning waterfronts. For athletes, the city doubles as a race-cation highlight reel — every medal shot can capture not just the achievement but also the beauty of Sweden’s capital.

  • Gamla Stan (Old Town) – Cobblestone lanes, pastel-coloured houses, and centuries of history create the perfect backdrop for medal photos. Walking here after the race feels like stepping into a storybook.
  • Monteliusvägen – A scenic cliffside path offering sweeping views over Lake Mälaren and Stockholm’s skyline. Popular for sunrise or sunset medal shots with dramatic city panoramas.
  • Stockholm City Hall – Iconic waterfront building where the Nobel Prize banquet is held. Its brick tower and arches make for a powerful, symbolic post-race photo.
  • Archipelago Ferries – Step aboard for a medal shot that captures the magic of Stockholm’s 30,000 islands. The sparkling waters and forested islets set a uniquely Scandinavian scene.
  • Strawberry Arena Exterior – A sleek, modern stadium that embodies the scale of the World Championships. A medal shot here proves you competed on the sport’s biggest stage.

Local Climate

Expect long daylight hours and mild temperatures in Stockholm during June, when the HYROX World Championships 2026 take place. Daily highs average 20–23°C (68–73°F), with cooler mornings and evenings. Rain is possible but infrequent, and the city is in full bloom—ideal for sightseeing, outdoor recovery walks, and racing at peak comfort. Pack for layers, including a light jacket and activewear suited for both indoor racing and outdoor exploration.

Local Eats

Stockholm blends clean Nordic flavors with global flair — perfect for athletes seeking both health and indulgence. Near the Strawberry Arena in Solna, you’ll find quick and reliable spots like Bröd & Salt (fresh-baked rye sandwiches and oat milk lattes) and Panini Internazionale (nutrient-packed salads and wraps on the go). For plant-based recovery fuel, head to Mahalo in nearby Odenplan for smoothie bowls, vegan mains, and gluten-free treats.

Beyond training-friendly eats, Stockholm invites you to taste its food culture. Local staples like gravad lax (cured salmon with dill and mustard sauce) and the Swedish tradition of fika — a coffee and pastry break, often featuring cinnamon buns from Fabrique — are must-tries. Whether you’re fueling for race day or winding down afterward, the city’s dining scene balances athlete nutrition with Scandinavian style.

  • Clean-Eats: Mahalo – Bowls, smoothies, and vegan-friendly recovery fuel.
  • Local Flavour: Tradition – Elegant takes on Swedish classics like herring, reindeer, and meatballs.
  • Quick Bite: MAX Burgers – Sweden’s own burger chain with customizable, athlete-friendly options (low-carb swaps, veggie burgers).

Local Gyms

Stockholm has one of Europe’s strongest functional fitness cultures, blending Scandinavian wellness traditions with cutting-edge performance training. Athletes here value both intensity and balance — it’s not unusual to see a heavy lifting session followed by a sauna and cold plunge. For HYROX competitors, the city offers world-class gyms that cover every aspect of prep: cardio engines, functional rigs, strength platforms, and recovery add-ons.

  • Official HYROX Training Club: Barry’s Bootcamp Stockholm – Known globally for its high-energy treadmill + strength intervals, Barry’s brings a structured HIIT format that mirrors HYROX intensity. With a dedicated HYROX partnership, it’s the go-to for athletes looking to sharpen their race-day engine.
  • CrossFit Nordic (15 min from arena) – One of Europe’s most respected CrossFit affiliates and a breeding ground for elite competitors. Expect SkiErgs, rowers, sleds, and full functional rigs. Drop-ins are common, and the atmosphere is both competitive and welcoming.
  • Delta Gym (city centre) – Legendary in Stockholm’s fitness scene, this hardcore facility has been home to powerlifters, bodybuilders, and athletes for decades. Fully equipped with sled tracks, rowers, and SkiErgs, it’s ideal for dialing in heavy strength work or sled prep.
  • Nordic Wellness Solna (near the arena) – A comprehensive training centre offering cardio floors, free weights, group classes, and recovery areas. Convenient for those who want to stay close to Strawberry Arena and balance HYROX prep with general conditioning.
  • Kampsportslabbet (combat + conditioning gym) – For athletes who like variety, this facility blends combat training with functional conditioning, providing an unconventional edge for agility and endurance.

Stockholm’s blend of modern wellness and natural beauty ensures that athletes have every tool at their fingertips to recover smart and come back stronger.

  • Outdoor: Hagaparken and Djurgården offer long, green trails for cooldown runs.
  • High-Tech: Nordic Strong Recovery Hub – cryotherapy and compression therapy for athletes.
